01 / Chasing the sunrise
An early start for a different kind of morning.
The aim of going to Alishan was simple: catch the sunrise. If you’re lucky, you might see it rise above a sea of clouds.
We went in November 2023. This was the mountain chapter I wanted to slow down for: an early morning, a walk through the forest, and time to explore beyond the main stop.

02 / Making time
My suggestion? Stay the night.
Many visitors go on a day tour, including trips that leave in the wee hours to catch sunrise. If you have the time, I’d recommend staying overnight and giving yourself more time to explore on foot.
I also noted stargazing tours offered locally. My notes mention about NT$120 per person, but that is a historical recollection from 2023, not a current offer.
03 / On foot
Railway stops and forest paths.
The Alishan Forest Railway and the areas around Zhaoping and Sacred Tree stations were part of my notes for exploring the forest. There are different walks to choose from, depending on how much time you have.

We walked down instead of taking the train. I wrote “Tashan Trail” in my original notes; I still need to check the exact route before sharing directions.
04 / A small discovery
A postcard from the mountains.
One little detail I liked: you can send a letter from the post office up there. It’s a lovely way to bring something home that isn’t another souvenir in your bag.
